I am an accredited infertility specialist and psychosexual therapist.  I am especially interested in how the infertility journey affects individuals and impacts on the couple relationship. I am very aware it can be an emotional roller coaster generating a myriad of feelings that can be tough to cope with.

I feel it can be really helpful to talk to someone during the infertility journey whether together or alone or a mixture of the two. 

Inevitably aspects of treatment can be very difficult and affect people in different ways. It can cause couples to get closer or to struggle at times and leave people feeling alone or misunderstood. A safe place to talk can be really useful here you can say what you need to without being judged.

I have been working in the field of fertility for over 20 years in both the private and NHS sectors and have worked with both individuals and couples.  There is no specific time during the treatment process that is the "right" time to have counselling; rather, it is the time that is "right" for the individual or couple. The whole process, from diagnosis to the end of treatment, whether successful or not, can be stressful, both for the individual and/or the couple relationship.  Sometimes, people just need a safe and confidential place to offload, without the fear of upsetting family or friends.  Sometimes, counselling can be an opportunity to discuss coping strategies, the next step or other options.  Counselling can also be used for issues that come up in the relationship during the process of fertility treatment.

Counselling can hopefully give more support to the individual and/or couple and alleviate some of the stress associated with what can be a difficult process, both physically and emotionally.

Fertility Counselling The experience of infertility can be very distressing and disruptive and feelings can range from despair, anger, anxiety and loneliness, to grief. The situation can also put a great strain on relationships, not only with a partner, wife or husband but with relatives and friends who may not fully understand what it is like to have fertility issues. It is hard to deal with other people announcing a pregnancy, having a baby or just seeing people enjoying family life. It is usually difficult to deal with the outcome of treatment if tests are negative or if the news is bad and its understandable that anxiety about the future then increases. Counselling offers a private place where you can explore difficult feelings and deal with the issues you are experiencing. It enables you to reduce the impact that infertility is having on your life, to talk through your options, prepare for treatment and have support afterwards.

I also have a special interest is in working with people who are thinking about sperm, egg or embryo donation and with those for whom surrogacy is an option, all of which can give rise to a whole range of feelings and issues that may be difficult to manage. I provide an opportunity to explore the personal implications for you and those close to you, and to discuss the legal framework for donation or surrogacy in the UK. 

Couple Counselling Relationships are complicated and change over time. If couples find they are not understanding each other, not feeling understood and if they are becoming increasingly stressed, it is very painful. Person centred counselling helps people to find a way through this distress.

Stress Management Stress comes in many forms. I work with people to identify the sources of their stress and find creative ways to reduce it. It can be so liberating to find that you can feel much more in control of your feelings and reactions.

My experience spans over ten years in both the private and public sector and my therapeutic approach is best described as integrative, because it draws on the theoretical, philosophical and clinical convictions of psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural (CBT) and family therapy. I have also joined more recently Kings Fertility.  In my practice, I recognise the importance to normalise and validate all the feelings one goes through.  I strive to support clients at their own pace.  It can take time to explore and decide on a treatment and therefore these sessions can be spaced to give you the time to research and reflect or one session  may be all  you need. This will be for you to decide.

I try and facilitate my clients to voice their thoughts and feelings. Sometimes this involves staying with the shock of the diagnosis, or if known before, revisiting the earlier trauma of it.  

Not everyone will have the family they wanted.  Working with ending and life after treatment requires time and support not always available at your clinic or in general counselling. Unrecognised grief where there have been no rituals, no funerals, no social recognition can be  the cause of feelings of depression or/and anger.

To support my work, I studied pre and post adoption issues and qualified with the Post Adoption Centre in 2002/3.  After this training I spent a few years offering experiential training to social workers in the UK to give them an insight into the fertility journey of prospective adopters. 

I have also offered training at the City Lit on a Person Centred Diploma course where I worked as a group and one-to-one supervisor for 20 years.

My name is Vicky and I am a specialist infertility counsellor. I think counselling can be seen as a scary word - some people I think feel it implies they can't cope - this couldn't be further from the truth. I much prefer to think of it as support at a very difficult time, my own personal journey taught me just how helpful this type of support can be. The diagnosis of infertility can often feel like a life crisis. It may be very difficult to come to terms with and it is completely normal to experience feelings of distress, loss, anxiety and frustration. All these feelings can be overwhelming and difficult to deal with.
